Transport Minister Anthony Loke highlighted the long-term vision for this initiative, emphasizing its critical role in sustaining the ECRL project and the broader Malaysian railway landscape. "We anticipate the need for continuous training and the recruitment of new talent for many years to come as the ECRL project moves into its operational phase," he stated.

Loke also extended a call to action for Malaysian Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions. He urged them to forge stronger partnerships with institutions like Liuzhou Railway Vocational Technical College to cultivate a larger pool of highly skilled individuals for the railway industry.

The skills acquired through this programme are expected to make graduates highly sought after, not only within Malaysia but also on the international stage. As global rail systems continue to expand, the demand for well-trained personnel remains consistently high.

Graduation Marks a Milestone for 66 Trainees

The recent graduation ceremony celebrated the successful completion of the O&M programme by 66 dedicated trainees. These individuals are part of a larger contingent of 259 Malaysian participants currently enrolled in various specialized courses at the college under the PLKI-ECRL umbrella.

The diverse training specializations include:

• Assistant Station Officers
• Signalling Technicians
• Overhead Line Technicians
• Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) Maintenance Technicians
• Locomotive and Wagon Maintenance Technicians
• Assistant Train Driver Trainees

The PLKI-ECRL programme is a testament to effective joint management, overseen by Malaysia Rail Link Sdn Bhd and China Communications Construction ECRL Sdn Bhd. This collaborative effort ensures the programme's alignment with industry needs and international standards.

Personal Journeys of Skill and Determination

Graduates shared their experiences, highlighting the unique challenges and immense rewards of the programme. Nur Shafika Diana Mohd Subky, 22, spoke about the demanding nature of handling sophisticated technical equipment and intricate rail signalling systems. She noted that certain assignments required a combination of physical stamina and meticulous precision, particularly when operating switch machines and control systems.

Despite the rigors, Shafika described the programme as an exceptional launchpad for young individuals seeking stable and fulfilling careers in the rail sector. "This programme is invaluable because upon completion of our studies, we are immediately ready to commence our professional journeys," she remarked.

Adam Faris Sufian, also 22, recounted the initial hurdles of learning in Mandarin but underscored the unwavering commitment of the trainees, supported by dedicated instructors and supplementary Mandarin language classes. He expressed immense pride in being part of the inaugural group, aspiring to contribute meaningfully to his country through the technical prowess he has gained.

Bridging Cultures, Building Competence

Lecturer Wu Yonggui observed a remarkable transformation in the Malaysian students throughout their tenure. Initially reserved, they gradually blossomed into active and engaged participants in the learning environment. He noted that while graduates are now qualified for roles such as ECRL assistant station officers, further standardized training specific to the ECRL operational environment would be beneficial between graduation and the commencement of their full career responsibilities.

The PLKI-ECRL O&M programme actively partners with Malaysian educational and training bodies to identify and recruit suitable candidates. The selection process often targets final-year diploma students and recent graduates eager to enter the technical field.

The training curriculum is meticulously designed to offer a holistic learning experience. It seamlessly integrates theoretical classroom instruction with practical, hands-on sessions in workshops and real-world railway operational environments.
