Zahid urges all parties to avoid old, unrelated issues in Johor campaign

Johor Election: Zahid Calls for Focus on Future, Not Old Grievances

As the Johor state election heats up, a prominent political figure has urged all contesting parties to steer clear of outdated narratives and instead concentrate on tangible issues that matter to the people of the state. The call comes amidst a complex political landscape where alliances at the federal level contrast with the fierce competition unfolding at the state.

Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, chairman of Barisan Nasional (BN), emphasized the need for a mature and respectful campaign. He believes the focus should squarely be on the strengths of individual candidates and the concrete proposals they offer to uplift the lives of Johor's residents.

Shifting the Campaign Narrative

The Deputy Prime Minister pointed out that some parties currently engaged in vigorous campaigning in Johor are also partners in the federal government. He expressed hope that past disputes and unrelated issues would not be resurrected, as this could create awkwardness among leaders who collaborate weekly in the Cabinet.

“I don’t think we need to raise other issues because every week we meet at the Cabinet meeting,” he stated, highlighting the importance of maintaining professional decorum. The sentiment is that the Johor election should be a platform for progress, not a rehashing of historical political battles.

BN's Underdog Stance and Youth Engagement

Contrary to any perception of overconfidence, Zahid asserted that BN views itself as the underdog in the upcoming state election. He cited significant shifts in Johor's political dynamics as the basis for this assessment. The party recognizes the imperative to work diligently to surpass its previous performance.

A key factor influencing this strategy is the evolving electorate. More than half of the voters in Johor are now young people, a demographic that requires specific attention and tailored policies. BN's manifesto, spearheaded by Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi, directly addresses the needs of this crucial segment.

Prioritizing Youth Opportunities

The manifesto places a strong emphasis on job creation and skills development, particularly through Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET). While the overall unemployment rate has seen a positive decline to 2.9 percent, Zahid stressed the continued need for young people to access high-paying jobs.

“What we are offering in Johor is technical and skills training for young people, with high opportunities being given strong emphasis in the Barisan Nasional manifesto,” he explained. This focus on practical skills and future-oriented employment is a cornerstone of BN's appeal to the younger generation.

A Call to Young Voters

Zahid made a direct appeal to young voters across Johor. He encouraged them to consider the future-oriented offerings presented by BN candidates when casting their ballots in the state election. The party's commitment to enhancing skills and creating pathways to better employment is central to this message.

Barisan Nasional is fielding candidates for all 56 seats in the 16th Johor state election. The election is scheduled with polling on July 11 and early voting on July 7, setting the stage for a critical contest that will shape the state's future direction.
