A significant restructuring of Malaysia's Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) landscape is on the horizon, with a new TVET Commission bill slated for tabling in Parliament before the close of the year. This move signals a determined effort to elevate and streamline the nation's approach to skills development.

The proposed commission will effectively supersede the existing National TVET Council, aiming to create a more robust and integrated system. This strategic shift is designed to bolster the entire TVET ecosystem, ensuring it meets the evolving demands of the modern workforce.

Forging a New Framework for Skills

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who also holds the portfolio of Rural and Regional Development Minister, has been a key proponent of this initiative. He emphasized that the establishment of the commission is a critical step in modernizing TVET delivery.

Extensive consultations are currently underway with a wide array of stakeholders. These crucial engagement sessions are designed to gather diverse perspectives and ensure the commission's mandate is comprehensive and effective.

The process involves submitting a detailed Cabinet paper for approval. While the core policy direction has received endorsement, the legislative pathway through both the Dewan Rakyat and Dewan Negara is being meticulously navigated, acknowledging the intricate legal considerations involved.

This announcement was made following the officiating of the Johor Darul Ta’zim TVET MARA Roadshow. The event, held at the Educity Sports Complex, underscored the practical application and reach of TVET programs within the state.

Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, in his capacity as chairman of the National TVET Council, highlighted that the commission's model is inspired by successful frameworks in developed nations. This international perspective aims to imbue the Malaysian system with best practices for maximum impact.

The commission's responsibilities will extend far beyond mere policy creation. It is envisioned to play an active role in the direct implementation and rigorous enforcement of the strategies it devises, ensuring accountability and tangible results.

Beyond the immediate focus on TVET, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi also addressed the significant influence of young voters, particularly in Johor. He noted that individuals aged 40 and below now constitute a substantial portion of the electorate, making their engagement paramount.

This demographic shift, including the impact of recent electoral reforms, places a considerable responsibility on political parties and leaders to connect with and address the aspirations of younger citizens.

The Minister expressed optimism about the alignment between the younger generation and the current leadership in Johor. He specifically mentioned Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi as a young leader who resonates with this demographic.
