Tuanku Muhriz installs new Undangs of Sungei Ujong and Rembau, calls for loyalty

Negeri Sembilan's Royal Hand Guides New Era for Key Chieftains

In a significant display of tradition and continuity, the Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan, Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir, presided over the formal installation of two new Undangs, or ruling chieftains, marking a pivotal moment for the state's unique governance structure.

These ceremonies, held at the majestic Istana Besar Seri Menanti, underscored the enduring importance of adat (customary law) and the power of consensus in shaping the state's leadership landscape.

A New Generation Steps Forward

The day began with the official investiture of Muhammad Faris Johari, a young leader at 28, as the 11th Undang of Luak Sungei Ujong. He now carries the esteemed title of Datuk Klana Petra.

Later in the afternoon, the mantle of leadership passed to Hassan Ab Hamid, 67, who was installed as the 22nd Undang of Luak Rembau, taking on the title of Datuk Sedia Raja.

The Sungei Ujong Ceremony: A Pledge of Loyalty

The morning's proceedings commenced with the respected Orang Empat Istana formally seeking royal consent to proceed. This traditional step paved the way for the newly appointed Undang of Sungei Ujong to pay his respects and pledge his unwavering allegiance to the Yang di-Pertuan Besar.

In his address, Tuanku Muhriz conveyed his earnest hope that these solemn pledges would be honored with unwavering sincerity, profound integrity, and a deep-seated sense of duty.

"I remind my Orang Kaya (chieftains) to remain loyal to the institution of the Yang Di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan and to maintain a close and respectful relationship with me and the Palace," the ruler emphasized during the installation ceremony.

The significant occasion was graced by the presence of the Tunku Ampuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan, Tuanku Aishah Rohani Tengku Besar Mahmud, alongside Tunku Besar Seri Menanti Tunku Ali Redhauddin Tuanku Muhriz and Tunku Panglima Besar Tunku Zain Al-‘Abidin.

Also in attendance were the Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun, and various heads of state government departments, highlighting the unified support for this traditional transition.

The Rembau Ceremony: Upholding Tradition and Welfare

The afternoon ceremony saw Hassan Ab Hamid formally assume his role as the new Undang of Luak Rembau. This appointment signifies a crucial continuation of leadership within the state.

Earlier, Hassan and his wife, Asmah Yaakob, were escorted to the palace in a vibrant procession of approximately 300 individuals, accompanied by the rhythmic beats of kompang percussion. This colorful display set a festive and respectful tone for the proceedings.

The Orang Empat Istana then presented ceremonial offerings, seeking the royal consent to officially begin the installation ceremony for the Rembau chieftain.

The new Rembau Undang subsequently paid homage and offered his pledge of allegiance to the Yang di-Pertuan Besar, solidifying his commitment to his new responsibilities.

In his royal address, Tuanku Muhriz characterized the appointment as a profound trust, born from the established consensus of adat. He stressed that this responsibility must be discharged with utmost sincerity, wisdom, and dedication to safeguarding tradition and ensuring the welfare of the people of Rembau.

"Any disputes should be managed with wisdom, diplomacy and a spirit of consensus," the ruler advised, reinforcing the importance of harmonious resolution.

The Pillars of Governance: Adat, Consensus, and Loyalty

Tuanku Muhriz articulated that relationships built on mutual respect, trust, and consensus are indispensable for preserving the constitutional monarchy, protecting customary traditions, and ensuring the state's sustained prosperity.

He also issued a call to the populace, urging them to collaborate closely with the customary leadership in fulfilling their duties. This partnership is vital for continuing to uphold and preserve the cherished values of Adat Perpatih, which have been passed down through generations.

The educational backgrounds of the new Undangs reflect a blend of modern learning and traditional upbringing. Muhammad Faris, born in 1997, holds a bachelor's degree in accountancy and professional qualifications from ACCA. Hassan, born in 1959, is a retired teacher with a long career dedicated to education.

These ceremonies serve as a powerful reminder of the enduring strength of traditional institutions within Negeri Sembilan's governance framework. The state's system masterfully integrates the monarchy, adat, and the collective will of the community, creating a robust and respected model of leadership.
