Transport Ministry: BAS.MY free travel card now open to Form Six students and government trainees

Nationwide Free Bus Travel Expands: Form Six Students and Government Trainees Gain Access

A significant expansion of a popular public transport initiative is set to ease the financial strain on a new cohort of young Malaysians. The government has officially broadened access to its unlimited travel card, a move that will now benefit not only school children and seniors but also Form Six students and those undergoing training at government institutes.

Bridging the Gap for Young Learners and Future Professionals

Previously, the BAS.MY concession card offered unrestricted travel for Malaysian school students aged seven to 17, senior citizens aged 60 and above, and registered individuals with disabilities. This latest policy update marks a crucial step in recognizing the travel needs of older students and those entering the workforce. The Minister of Transport highlighted the immediate impact of this decision. For the Kuching and Kota Samarahan regions alone, an estimated 2,350 Form Six students and over 3,200 trainees at government institutions are expected to benefit from this program. This initiative aims to significantly reduce their daily travel expenses.

Affordable Journeys: Fares Remain Stable Amidst Economic Headwinds

Despite global economic uncertainties, assurances have been given that BAS.MY fares will not see an increase. This commitment is underpinned by substantial government subsidies covering both fuel and operational costs for bus operators. The ministry's stance is clear: the government does not seek to profit from this public service. The primary objective is to encourage greater utilization of public transport, positioning it as a vital and accessible alternative for all citizens.

Expanding Reach: New Routes and Future Horizons for Kuching's Commuters

Beyond the expanded eligibility, the BAS.MY program is also enhancing its physical network. Through the Sarawak Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board, six new routes have been introduced in and around Kuching. These new routes, operational since early April, aim to improve connectivity and provide more convenient travel options. They include services to areas such as Arang Road, Taman Hui Sing, Siburan, Summer Mall, Stutong Baru/Kuching Sentral, and Taman Sukma. The introduction of these new routes is a testament to the government's commitment to not only broadening bus coverage but also ensuring the public receives efficient, comfortable, and reliable transport services. The success of these initial expansions is already evident, with nearly 850,000 passengers utilizing the BAS.MY Kuching service as of April. Looking ahead, plans are already underway for a second phase of BAS.MY expansion. This future phase is slated to focus on bringing similar benefits to secondary cities across the nation, with Sibu and Bintulu being key targets for near-term development. This strategic approach underscores a long-term vision for a more connected and accessible public transport system nationwide.
