Perkeso's Ambitious Vision: New Rehabilitation Centre Poised to Revolutionize Worker Recovery and Skyrocket Claims
A seismic shift is on the horizon for worker protection and rehabilitation, with projections indicating a staggering 200% surge in annual claims for the Social Security Organisation (Perkeso). This dramatic increase is directly linked to the rollout of innovative protection schemes designed to cast a wider net of support for the nation's workforce.
A New Era of Protection Dawns
The anticipated leap in claims, from an average of 170,000 cases annually to potentially over half a million, is a direct consequence of forward-thinking initiatives. These include the LINDUNG 24 Jam program, the forthcoming Gig Workers Act 2025, and a soon-to-be-launched Traveller Scheme.
This proactive expansion of coverage necessitates a parallel evolution in rehabilitation services. The goal is clear: to ensure that financial protection is complemented by robust pathways back to active contribution and economic participation.
Sultan Nazrin Shah Perkeso Rehabilitation Centre: A Beacon of Innovation
At the heart of this transformative push stands the newly inaugurated Sultan Nazrin Shah Perkeso Rehabilitation Centre. This state-of-the-art facility, formerly known as the Perkeso Neuro-Robotic Rehabilitation and Cybernics Centre, was officially opened by His Royal Highness the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah.
The centre represents a significant investment, costing approximately RM1 billion, and stands as the largest rehabilitation facility of its kind in Southeast Asia. Its capacity to treat up to 700 patients concurrently promises to significantly enhance the nation's ability to care for its injured and ailing workforce.
Transforming Rehabilitation with Cutting-Edge Technology
The Sultan Nazrin Shah Perkeso Rehabilitation Centre is not just large; it's technologically advanced. It boasts the world's most extensive collection of Cyberdyne Hybrid Assistive Limb (HAL) units. Through a strategic alliance with Cyberdyne Inc. of Japan, 65 advanced Cyberdyne devices are now available.
These devices, encompassing lower limb, single joint, and lumbar units, are integral to the treatment of patients. They represent a significant leap forward in assistive technology for rehabilitation, offering new hope for recovery.
A Comprehensive Ecosystem for Recovery
The centre is designed to be a global referral hub for neuro-robotic rehabilitation. It offers an impressive 151 distinct services, positioning it as a Centre of Excellence. These services span a wide spectrum, including:
- Neuro-robotic rehabilitation
- Cybernic treatment
- Neuromodulation therapies
- Advanced return-to-work (RTW) programs
Further enhancing its capabilities are specialized platforms. The Advanced Biomechanics Rehabilitation Platform seamlessly integrates robotics, virtual reality, and movement simulation. Complementing this is the Advanced Movement Analysis Laboratory, a pioneering facility in Malaysia utilizing motion capture technology, force plates, and electromyography (EMG).
Beyond Clinical Care: Fostering Reintegration
The commitment to patient well-being extends beyond physical rehabilitation. The centre incorporates vocational rehabilitation services, offering training modules in diverse fields such as technical skills, culinary arts, creative industries, administration, and beauty services. This holistic approach aims to boost patients' functionality and employability.
Industry partnerships are crucial to this reintegration process. Collaborations with local businesses provide invaluable on-the-job training opportunities, covering areas like culinary arts, barista skills, and entrepreneurship. This ensures that patients gain practical, in-demand skills.
Bridging the Gap Back to Employment
The final, critical step in the rehabilitation journey is successful reintegration into the workforce. Perkeso facilitates this through its MYFutureJobs platform, offering direct job matching and placement services. This ensures that the skills acquired and the recovery achieved translate into meaningful employment.
Additionally, the Centre for Applied Prevention in Social Security (CAPSS) within the facility features a Motorcycle Safety Training Track (MSTT). This dedicated facility, equipped with simulators and inspection workshops, is specifically designed for workers in high-risk sectors, underscoring a commitment to preventative safety alongside rehabilitation.
Since its operational commencement in July 2025, the Sultan Nazrin Shah Perkeso Rehabilitation Centre has already provided treatment to 1,095 patients. These individuals have received care for a range of significant conditions, including accidents, occupational diseases, spinal cord injuries, and non-communicable diseases like stroke, demonstrating the immediate impact of this vital facility.
