Pakatan candidate for Kukup Cheah Chee Hong banks on JS-SEZ to lift local economy

Kukup's Economic Revival: Candidate Bets on Special Zone to Empower Locals, Fishermen

In the coastal district of Kukup, a significant economic transformation is on the horizon, fueled by the ambitious Johor–Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ). For Pakatan Harapan candidate Cheah Chee Hong, this development isn't just a policy initiative; it's a direct pathway to uplifting the lives of his constituents, particularly the local entrepreneurs and hardworking fishermen.

Harnessing the JS-SEZ for Local Prosperity

Cheah, a seasoned entrepreneur himself, sees the JS-SEZ as a golden opportunity for Kukup. His vision centers on ensuring that the economic benefits generated by this cross-border initiative directly translate into tangible improvements for the people of Kukup. He believes the area is poised for a significant tourism boom, especially with the impending launch of the Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link.

The RTS Link is anticipated to dramatically increase the flow of visitors from Singapore into Johor. Cheah’s strategic plan involves positioning Kukup as a prime destination within the JS-SEZ, aiming to attract these new arrivals and unlock a wave of economic opportunities for the local community. This strategic positioning, he argues, is key to fostering sustainable growth.

Infrastructure and Services: The Foundation for Growth

Should he be given the mandate, Cheah has pledged to prioritize essential infrastructure upgrades. This includes enhancing road networks, improving street lighting, and expanding parking facilities to accommodate increased visitor traffic. Furthermore, he intends to bolster vital services such as internet connectivity and ensure a more reliable supply of electricity and water.

These foundational improvements are seen as critical to supporting the influx of economic activity and ensuring that local businesses can thrive. A well-equipped Kukup will be better positioned to capitalize on the opportunities presented by the JS-SEZ.

Cultivating a New Generation of Entrepreneurs

Beyond infrastructure, Cheah is passionate about nurturing local talent and fostering a robust entrepreneurial spirit. He has proposed the establishment of a large-scale night market near the Kukup ferry terminal, designed to house up to 200 stalls.

This initiative is specifically aimed at providing a vibrant platform for local entrepreneurs to showcase and sell their products. Cheah’s ambition extends beyond simply creating jobs; he aims to empower the youth of Kukup to build successful businesses within their own community, reducing the need to relocate to larger cities like Johor Bahru or Singapore for employment.

A Call to Young Voters

Cheah is actively encouraging young and first-time voters to participate in the upcoming elections. He emphasizes that their votes are crucial in realizing the vision for economic development and strengthening the local entrepreneurial ecosystem. Their engagement, he believes, will be instrumental in shaping the future of Kukup.

Championing the Welfare of Fishermen

The fishing community, a vital part of Kukup’s identity, is also a key focus for Cheah. He acknowledges the existing support measures provided by the Madani Government, such as diesel subsidies and cost of living allowances for fishermen. However, he recognizes that many still face hurdles in accessing this aid.

Cheah’s commitment is to simplify the process of obtaining information and completing applications for these assistance programs. His goal is to ensure that every eligible fisherman can easily benefit from the support available, thereby improving their livelihoods and strengthening this traditional industry.

Politics as a Catalyst for Change

With a background in non-governmental organizations, Cheah understands the power of community service. He views politics as a broader and more impactful platform for driving significant change. While NGO work can help individuals, he believes an elected representative can positively influence thousands, or even the entire community.

This conviction, stemming from his desire to create widespread positive impact, is what led him to enter the political arena. His familiarity with Kukup, stemming from frequent visits since his school days to enjoy its renowned seafood and fishing village charm, further solidifies his connection to the area.

The Electoral Landscape in Kukup

The Kukup state seat is set for a direct contest between Cheah Chee Hong of Pakatan Harapan and Md Israk Abdullah representing Barisan Nasional. The constituency is home to 34,968 registered voters, with Malays forming the largest demographic group at 60.07 percent, followed by Chinese voters at 36.85 percent, and Indians at 0.89 percent. The remaining voters originate from Sabah and Sarawak.

The Johor state election is scheduled for July 11, with early voting taking place on July 7. The outcome of this election will significantly shape the implementation of economic development plans and the future of the local community in Kukup.
