Upon arriving in South Korea, Agossou embarked on a year of intensive language study, a crucial step before commencing his master’s program. "I saw trash everywhere growing up," he recalls, a stark visual that fueled his desire to be part of the solution.

Three years into his doctoral studies, the academic path began to feel increasingly misaligned with Agossou’s evolving aspirations. He realized that a PhD would likely funnel him into one of two predetermined roles: a university professor or a dedicated researcher. “I couldn’t see myself in that future,” he shares candidly.

The introspection sparked by this realization led him to reflect on his earlier job-hunting experiences. During those challenging months, he had meticulously analyzed the hiring system for foreigners, dissecting how companies evaluated résumés and how international skills could be best presented. This period of intense study, born out of necessity, planted the seeds of entrepreneurship.

“Business doesn’t care what your major was,” he reflects. “It cares about problems and solutions.” This insight marked a significant turning point, shifting his focus from academic credentials to practical application and market needs. The master’s scholarship had provided the foundation, but his future lay beyond the traditional academic framework.

Pivoting Towards a New Horizon

Faced with this critical juncture, Agossou made a courageous decision that many find daunting: he chose to put his PhD on hold. Today, he runs a startup dedicated to assisting foreigners in South Korea with job searching, résumé building, and cultural adaptation. “I built what I wish I had,” he says with a laugh, a testament to his entrepreneurial spirit.
