Government Signals Data-Driven Approach to Fuel Subsidies Amid Global Volatility

In a move aimed at reassuring citizens and businesses, the government has affirmed its commitment to a measured and data-informed strategy for fuel subsidies, even as geopolitical tensions cast a long shadow over global energy markets. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof emphasized that any adjustments to existing policies will be carefully considered, ruling out abrupt changes that could destabilize the economy or unduly burden the populace.

The international landscape is fraught with uncertainty, particularly concerning energy supply. The government acknowledges the potential for prolonged geopolitical conflicts, which could impact global energy prices and availability for years to come. Despite a significant escalation in global energy costs, the government intends to maintain its current fuel subsidy framework. Monthly subsidy expenditures have reportedly climbed to an estimated RM6 billion to RM7 billion, a substantial figure reflecting the global price surge.

However, Fadillah assured that this support for the people will continue without jeopardizing broader economic development objectives. Existing subsidy policies, including those for RON95 petrol and diesel in key regions like Sabah and Sarawak, will remain in place. This commitment is rooted in current data, aiming to prevent sudden spikes in the cost of living from overwhelming citizens.
